What makes horses so special? How do EFW sessions help people?

Horses are highly sensitive herd animals who demonstrate deep empathy and intuition. Horses are incredible at nonverbal communication and by learning about how they communicate, clients may learn about ways to be present and clear within themselves in a body-centered way. Spending time with horses can open up emotional freedom and a space to confront challenging emotions and beliefs in a supportive environment. Grooming practices can offer an opportunity for regulation and relationship building with ourselves and the horse. Leading and engaging in physical exercises with horses can build confidence, connection, and enhance nonverbal communication.

Horses are highly aware of their surroundings - this can include the emotional states of their herd companions and humans. Working with emotions in this nonverbal way may foster deepened self-awareness and understanding, without fear of judgment. The relational nature of horses also offers connection, safety and trust building opportunities in a way we don't typically have access to in our busy lives.

Do EFW sessions involve riding the horse?

No, sessions are focussed solely on groundwork. I am not a certified riding coach and my background includes integrating my training as a registered psychologist with equine facilitated wellness principles to provide clients an experiential way to work with emotions, beliefs and experiences.

How does a typical session look? What to expect?

Sessions are flexible and adapted to each individual client. I do not believe there is a specific framework or template that works for everyone and work to meet clients with curiosity, openness and flexibility. I work from a process-based approach vs a tools focused approach. This means that sessions often focus on exploring how experiences and beliefs shape and inform our current coping and then working with this insight to explore change processes.

For children, sessions are sometimes more tool-focussed. Sessions still embody curiosity and exploration; however, often more concrete strategies are identified to support both the child and their parent in applying new ideas outside of the therapy space.

Do you do direct billing?

I do offer direct billing for Blue Cross, Telus E-claims and Sunlife. I am in the process of registering with NIHB and hope to have this complete by summer 2026. I use Jane App for easy client booking, payment and invoice tracking. Clients are welcome to pay via credit card, e-transfer or our office terminal.

Can I do both EFW and office based sessions?

Yes, many clients blend both equine and office based approaches in their work with me. We can find an approach that works best for you.

What is the average length of time clients work with you?

I do not adhere to a specific treatment length with clients and work with an open door policy. Some clients see me for an acute struggle or issue for several months. Other clients enjoy the opportunity to work more long term, committing to pieces of work as they arise over time. In session, we will develop a pace and session frequency that works for you and your individual needs.

Who can benefit from EFW sessions?

Truly anyone! Children, teens and adults are all welcome to engage in this type of therapy. EFW work also offers a culturally inclusive and less traditional way to engage in emotional healing. Some clients also enjoy the opportunity to simply take their talk therapy or EMDR session outside or be in the presence of horses while processing - sometimes we might bring two chairs out to the pasture to process or go for a walk with one of the horses outside. I always say, horses are magic! Just being in their presence is incredibly regulating.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a type of therapy that helps people process and heal from difficult or traumatic experiences. During a session, you focus on a specific memory while following a therapist’s hand movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This can help you process emotions, reduce distress and feel more at peace with the past.
